EXPLORE Grants for Arts Organizations in Illinois
This grant provides funding to arts organizations in Chicago and Cook County to help them adapt and innovate their operations and practices, with a focus on supporting BIPOC-led initiatives and fostering long-term sustainability.
Description
The THINK • EXPLORE • SHARE grant program provides arts organizations in Chicago and Cook County with funding to adapt to changing circumstances, address key challenges, and promote equity. These grants are intended specifically for planning (THINK) and enacting (EXPLORE) new operational or artistic practices, supporting organizations in transforming structures, operations, or finances to become more resilient and mission-focused. The program does not cover ongoing operational costs; instead, it funds projects that redefine partnerships, tackle longstanding organizational challenges, support critical transitions, and build foundations for long-term sustainability. Priority is given to initiatives that address capacity-building needs and foster sustainable practices.
At least 65% of grants are allocated to BIPOC-led arts organizations, and the selection process involves a panel of artists, arts leaders, and funders. Proposals do not need to present entirely new ideas; existing projects or broader, multi-funded efforts may also be eligible if AWF funding will significantly advance the work. Organizations may apply for either a THINK or EXPLORE grant, with each organization limited to one grant application at a time. Collaborative proposals are encouraged, including cross-sector partnerships, but should demonstrate equitable resource distribution and ensure that arts organizations are the primary beneficiaries.
Eligibility
To qualify, applicants must:
Have an arts-based mission and be either a 501(c)(3) public charity or have a fiscal agent with this designation.
Be BIPOC-led arts organizations with annual expenses of $2 million or below, or any arts organization with expenses under $800,000.
Be based in and serve the Chicago and Cook County area.
Ineligible Activities
The program does not fund general operating support, creative production, ongoing programming, or capacity-neutral projects. It excludes funding for schools, universities, religious entities, debt reduction, capital campaigns, or purchases such as equipment, software, and annual audits.
Selection Criteria
Applications are reviewed based on:
Idea/Need: Clearly defined issue or question and its current importance to the organization.
Adaptation: Whether the project represents a meaningful shift in organizational practice.
Plan: The clarity and feasibility of the proposed approach.
Capacity: Suitability of the budget and the organization’s ability to complete the project.
Impact: Potential for significant organizational improvement and sustainable change.
Broader Learning (EXPLORE only): Potential for insights from the project to benefit the broader arts field.
Through this program, AWF supports arts organizations in building adaptive, sustainable capacities, with a special focus on advancing BIPOC-led initiatives and cross-organizational learning.
