This funding opportunity supports programs that empower women entrepreneurs in Ethiopia by providing them with essential skills, resources, and networks to start and grow sustainable businesses.

Description

The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) FY2025 funding opportunity, announced by the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia, invites proposals to implement programs aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs. The AWE initiative focuses on equipping women with the skills, networks, and resources to start and scale sustainable businesses. Proposed projects must align with key goals, including increasing participants' business planning capabilities, connecting them with U.S.-based business models and experts, building networks for female entrepreneurs, and fostering long-term business sustainability. Proposals are encouraged to integrate digital skills and English language training to enhance participants' technical abilities and access.

Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, public and private educational institutions, individuals, and public international or governmental organizations. For-profit entities and proposals focused on religious activities, construction, partisan political activity, scientific research, fundraising, or duplicative programming are ineligible. Organizations must have a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) and active registration in SAM.gov, while individuals are exempt from this requirement. Applicants are limited to one proposal submission.

Proposals must utilize either the DreamBuilder platform, which offers business plan development and modules on marketing and bookkeeping, or the Najafi 100 Million Learners Global Initiative for advanced entrepreneurship content. Programs are expected to include in-person and online training sessions, mentorship from U.S. exchange alumni, and outreach to key regions where the Embassy operates American Corners, such as Addis Ababa, Jimma, Dire Dawa, Mekelle, and Bahir Dar. The U.S. Embassy will provide substantial involvement in the program's implementation, including approving participants, speakers, and promotional content, as well as assisting with digital training resources.

Applications must include a comprehensive proposal that outlines the program’s goals, activities, and measurable objectives. Additional requirements include a budget justification narrative, details on key personnel, and letters of support from project partners. Proposed budgets must justify all expenses, including personnel, travel, supplies, and equipment, while ensuring equipment purchases remain below 10 percent of the total budget. Programs are expected to conclude within 12 months, with funding ranging from $15,000 to $35,000, subject to availability.

Applications will be evaluated based on criteria including program feasibility, budget justification, organizational capacity, monitoring and evaluation plans, sustainability, and support for equity and underserved communities. The deadline for submission is January 23, 2025, at 12:00 PM GMT+3. Proposals must be submitted via email to PASAddisGrants@state.gov, and applicants should anticipate notification of results by March 2025.

Successful applicants will need to adhere to post-award reporting requirements, including financial and programmatic updates, and comply with U.S. government policies and federal grant regulations. For further information or clarification, applicants can contact the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia directly at the provided email address.
