Community Priority Grants
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island that focus on addressing community priorities and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
Description
The Community Priority Grant program is one of the Rhode Island Foundation’s core grant programs, designed to provide both programmatic and general operating support to nonprofit organizations that align with the Foundation’s Five-Year Action Plan. This plan was created following a year-long community engagement process conducted in 2023, where the Foundation gathered input from Rhode Islanders of diverse backgrounds. This process identified six critical community priorities that will guide the Foundation’s efforts to build a thriving and equitable Rhode Island.
Community Priority Grants directly support organizations addressing at least one of the community priorities outlined in the plan. In all cases, proposals must demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA), ensuring that funded efforts intentionally address systemic inequities and foster stronger, more inclusive communities.
Grants for this program are offered twice a year, and organizations may receive only one Community Priority grant per calendar year. The application process consists of two stages: first, a pre-application, and second, a full application if the proposal is deemed a good fit. The pre-application for Round 1 opens on January 17, 2025, with a submission deadline of March 3, 2025. Round 2 opens on August 1, 2025, with a deadline of September 5, 2025. Pre-applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and selected organizations will be invited to complete a full application. Notifications of awards will be made in June for the first round and in December for the second.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations based in Rhode Island. Organizations outside Rhode Island that demonstrate unique service to Rhode Island communities may also be considered. Additionally, organizations without 501(c)(3) status may apply through a fiscal sponsor that holds the designation. The grant does not fund individuals, for-profit businesses, event sponsorships, or capital projects.
Grant amounts generally range from $15,000 to $150,000, with an average award of approximately $65,000. Applications are evaluated based on organizational health, potential community impact, demonstrated connection with the community served, a sound implementation plan, and a sustainability strategy. Successful applicants must submit a narrative, project budget, and expected outcomes as part of their full application.
Grantees may also be asked to submit periodic progress updates and a final project report. In addition, the Foundation may convene occasional meetings with grantees to facilitate peer learning and gather feedback on improving the grant process.
