South Carolina Arts Commission

This grant provides financial support and mentorship to emerging artists in South Carolina to help them develop their artistic practice and advance their careers.

Description

The South Carolina Arts Commission is currently accepting applications for its Emerging Artist Grants, which are designed to support the artistic and career development of emerging artists in South Carolina. This grant program aims to provide both financial assistance and mentorship to help artists deepen their artistic practice, encourage career growth, foster artistic relevance and sustainability, and offer professional development opportunities. The grant is available to artists who have been active in their field for one to five years and who are legal residents of South Carolina.

The purpose of the Emerging Artist Grants is to assist artists in their early careers by providing project-based funding of up to $1,800. The grant period runs from January 1 to June 30, 2025. Eligible projects can include artwork creation, exhibitions, and arts instruction, but must primarily focus on one discipline. The funding cannot be used for operating support for an individual artistic business or for professional development activities such as attending conferences or training sessions.

To be eligible for the grant, applicants must be practicing artists in specific disciplines, including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, crafts, photography, design arts, media arts, literature, spoken word, time-based arts, and public art. Additionally, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have been a resident of South Carolina for at least one year prior to the application, and not be a degree-seeking student during the grant period. Priority will be given to projects located in designated Opportunity Initiative Counties, which include Allendale, Bamberg, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clarendon, Dillon, Edgefield, Hampton, Jasper, Laurens, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Saluda, and Williamsburg.

The funds from the Emerging Artist Grant can be used for various project-related costs, including supplies and materials, equipment, furniture, and professional services necessary to complete the proposed project. However, the grant does not cover general operating expenses or professional development activities unrelated to the specific project.

Applicants must submit their proposals by the deadline of November 12, 2024. The application process will require detailed responses to specific questions regarding the proposed project, including its objectives, timeline, and budget. Evaluation criteria will focus on the artistic merit of the project, the potential for professional growth, and the feasibility of the proposed activities.
