Description
The Big Sky Film Grant (BSFG) is a competitive grant program administered by the Montana Film Office (MFO) under the Montana Department of Commerce. The grant aims to attract filmmakers and production companies to Montana, promote economic activity, enhance tourism, and support the growth of the state’s film industry. Funding supports a range of eligible film projects, including feature films, short films, documentaries, television or streaming series, and Montana-centric content. Projects must be Montana-based, and applicants are encouraged to demonstrate significant economic impact and community engagement.
The program offers multiple grant categories, including:
Feature Film and TV: No maximum award, with a minimum Montana-spend of $350,000.
Short Form Content: Awards range from $1,000 to $50,000 for projects with budgets under $350,000.
Resident Feature Film and TV: Up to $100,000 for projects led by Montana-resident filmmakers.
Resident Short Form Content: Up to $50,000 for projects led by Montana-resident filmmakers.
Applications must include detailed project descriptions, budgets, filming schedules, and evidence of secured funding. Special consideration is given to projects that film in rural Montana, engage Montana-based vendors, or employ Montana residents. Applicants are allowed one submission per funding cycle. The total annual program funding is $1.5 million.
