Description
The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) provides funding to Vermont municipalities, nonprofits, and other government entities for the development, restoration, and maintenance of public recreational trails. Funded by the Federal Highway Administration and administered by Vermont’s Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR), the program supports both motorized and non-motorized trail projects to increase accessibility and enhance recreational options across Vermont. Approximately $500,000 is available for 2025, with grants up to $50,000 and a 20% applicant match required. The grant program includes two tracks: a Standard RTP Track for general trail maintenance and development, and a Flood Recovery Track for trail repair projects addressing 2024 flood damage.
Eligible projects include trail maintenance, new trail construction, trailhead facilities, educational initiatives, and land acquisition for trails. Projects in the Flood Recovery Track must focus on flood-related trail repairs and be completed by January 31, 2025, while Standard RTP projects must be completed between July 14, 2025, and December 31, 2026.
Application Process: The process begins with a required pre-application, due by December 6, 2024, followed by invitations for full applications due by January 31, 2025. Compliance with federal and state regulations is required, covering environmental, historical, and civil rights guidelines.
