This funding opportunity provides financial support to Minority Serving Institutions to conduct research on the environmental and societal impacts of future air transportation technologies, with a focus on benefiting overburdened communities and promoting diversity in the STEM workforce.

Description

The Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Aeronautics Community and Environmental Impact Research (ACEIR) funding opportunity from NASA provides support for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to conduct innovative research on the environmental and societal impacts of future air transportation technologies and infrastructure. This program seeks to address challenges faced by overburdened communities and to develop equitable, safe, accessible, and affordable aviation systems. The initiative also aims to build institutional capacity at MSIs and promote diversity within the STEM workforce.

Eligible applicants are U.S. institutions designated as MSIs by the U.S. Department of Education at the time of proposal submission. Non-MSI institutions are encouraged to partner with eligible MSIs to participate in this opportunity. Proposals not meeting the MSI eligibility criteria will not be reviewed. Both public and private higher education institutions are invited to apply.

The program anticipates making up to seven awards, with a total funding pool of $4,500,000. Individual awards can range from $0 to a maximum of $750,000. Cost-sharing or matching funds are not required for this program. Funding will be provided through cooperative agreements, and projects will support interdisciplinary research integrating community perspectives and innovative practices.

Applications must focus on advancing understanding of the effects of future aviation technologies on communities and the environment, with a special emphasis on equitable solutions and broad societal benefits. Successful proposals will leverage the unique expertise and community relationships of MSIs to create transformative research outcomes. Projects will also involve faculty and student participation to enhance research capacity and workforce development at MSIs.

The application deadline is March 3, 2025. Interested applicants should consult the NASA MSI List to confirm their eligibility and are encouraged to prepare proposals that demonstrate alignment with program objectives and NASA's mission. Questions regarding the program can be directed to Bonnie Murray, the MUREP ACEIR Activity Manager, via the contact information provided in the solicitation.
