Neighborhood Parks Enhancement Program
This program provides $1.5 million for neighborhood organizations in Phoenix to propose and fund minor capital improvements in local parks, enhancing community spaces without increasing ongoing maintenance costs.
Description
The City of Phoenix has launched the Neighborhood Parks Enhancement Program, an initiative funded by the recently approved General Obligation (GO) Bond Program. This program allocates $1.5 million for minor capital improvements in local parks across all council districts, aiming to enhance the quality and accessibility of neighborhood parks. The program invites neighborhood organizations to submit proposals for park improvement projects, providing an opportunity for local groups to actively participate in the development and beautification of community spaces.
The application period runs from September 27 to November 8, 2024. To be eligible, projects must be located within a City of Phoenix park and involve capital improvements, such as infrastructure upgrades or renovations. Importantly, proposed projects should not introduce additional ongoing maintenance or operational costs for the Parks and Recreation Department. Eligible applicants include neighborhood organizations registered with the City’s Neighborhood Services Department; unregistered groups must complete registration online before submitting a proposal. Each organization is allowed to submit only one project application for this funding cycle.
Project proposals must adhere to certain requirements to be considered for funding. They need to focus on public investments in park infrastructure or renovations that meet existing infrastructure standards, such as water lines or electrical systems. Additionally, the projects must be completed by city-approved contractors and align with City standards. Combining funds from other Parks and Recreation Department sources is not permitted, ensuring that each project is independently funded through this program. The selected projects are expected to be completed within the GO Bond Program timeline, which spans from 2024 to 2029.
Applicants should submit their proposals through an online portal available on the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s website by the November 8, 2024, deadline. The evaluation process will take place following the application period, with the announcement of selected projects scheduled for early 2025. The Parks and Recreation Department will then establish a timeline for each approved project’s completion within the program’s designated timeframe.
This initiative offers neighborhood organizations a significant opportunity to improve their local parks, fostering community involvement in the enhancement of public spaces. By focusing on projects that contribute to infrastructure development without adding long-term maintenance costs, the program aims to deliver sustainable improvements that benefit the city’s residents for years to come. Interested groups are encouraged to act promptly to register and submit their applications, ensuring they meet all eligibility and project criteria.
