NewFest’s New Voices Filmmaker Grant 2025
This initiative provides $25,000 in funding and mentorship to emerging LGBTQ+ filmmakers in the U.S. to help them create new works that amplify queer voices and stories.
Description
The New Voices Filmmaker Grant, presented by NewFest in partnership with Netflix, is an initiative designed to support emerging LGBTQ+ filmmakers by providing financial assistance and professional development opportunities. The grant offers $25,000 in unrestricted funding to four selected directors each cycle, enabling them to create new work that amplifies LGBTQ+ voices and stories. Additionally, recipients receive industry mentorship, networking opportunities, and a platform to showcase their work at NewFest’s New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival, one of the most prominent queer film festivals in the world. Fellows also have the chance to travel to other North American film festivals as guests of NewFest, further expanding their exposure and industry connections.
The primary goal of the grant is to uplift underrepresented voices in the film industry by supporting LGBTQ+ filmmakers who have not yet directed a feature-length film. The initiative seeks to empower these creators by offering financial backing, professional mentorship, and significant visibility through festival participation. By providing an opportunity to develop their craft and expand their reach, the program aims to increase queer representation in the media landscape.
The funding can be used for any filmmaking-related expenses, including but not limited to production, post-production, research, and development. The grant is unrestricted, allowing recipients to allocate funds based on their individual project needs. The four selected filmmakers will also receive invitations to industry events, networking sessions, and professional development programs curated by NewFest and its partners.
Eligibility for the grant is limited to emerging LGBTQ+ directors who meet specific criteria. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. They must have resided in the United States continuously for at least the past two years and intend to remain in the U.S. for the duration of the grant period, which extends through June 2026. Eligible applicants must have directed at least one short film or episodic project featuring LGBTQ+ content within the past three years but must not have directed a completed feature-length film. Additionally, they must not have formal representation, such as an agent or manager, nor have secured a North American distribution deal with monetary compensation.
Applications must be submitted through an Airtable form and include a resume/CV, links to one to three completed work samples, an artist statement (maximum 600 words), and a statement of intent (maximum 400 words). The artist statement should reflect the applicant’s background, past directing experience, and artistic approach to LGBTQ+ storytelling. The statement of intent should outline the applicant’s filmmaking goals and detail how they plan to use the grant funds. At least one work sample must have been completed within the past three years, while any additional samples must be from the past five years.
The application period for the 2025 cycle is currently open and will close on February 13, 2025. Following the selection process, the grant period will span from July 2025 to June 2026.
