This funding opportunity supports the Coriell Institute in maintaining and expanding a repository of high-quality human cell lines and DNA samples for biomedical research, benefiting scientists studying genetic disorders and human health.

Description

The funding opportunity titled “Single Source: The NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository (U42 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)” is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). This grant is a non-competitive cooperative agreement designed for a single recipient, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research. The opportunity is a reissue of RFA-GM-19-002, reflecting updated alignment with agency priorities. It supports the continued operation and enhancement of the NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository (HGCR).

The primary objective of the HGCR is to acquire, maintain, and distribute high-quality human cell lines and DNA samples to the biomedical research community. The repository currently holds over 11,900 cell lines, 5,900 DNA samples, and 85 iPSC lines, representing a wide range of genetic disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, and diverse populations. The grant ensures that all samples have proper consent for research use, and supports the biobank’s engagement with the global community to maintain and improve best practices in biobanking.

The award provides funding of up to $1.75 million per year, with expectations of increasing cost recovery over five years: 70% in years 1–2, 75% in years 3–4, and 80% in year 5. The project period may last up to five years. Only one application from the Coriell Institute is allowed, emphasizing the single-source nature of this grant. All eligible organizations must complete registrations with federal grant systems including SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov.

Applications must adhere to the NIH Multi-Project Application Guide and specific instructions provided in the NOFO. Key components include Scientific and Administrative Management, a Database and Web-based Catalog, and a Resource Core. The proposal must include detailed plans for administrative structure, informed consent management, sustainability, and outreach. Notably, the grant does not permit clinical trials and is intended for renewals or resubmissions tied to previous awardees only.

The application process includes a review for scientific merit, operational planning, and resource strategy. Deadlines for application submission fall annually on June 10 through the expiration date, which was updated to April 23, 2025. Applicants must ensure electronic submission through NIH-approved platforms and compliance with NIH policies, including human subjects protections and ethical use of samples.

For technical or application-related inquiries, applicants may contact Ronald Adkins at ronald.adkins@nih.gov, or for grants management questions, Lan Nguyen at nguyenLa@mail.nih.gov. Additional support is provided through the eRA Service Desk and Grants.gov.
