Virginia Humanities Regular Grants
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit organizations for community engagement and educational projects that promote public understanding of the humanities.
Description
The Regular Grants program offers funding twice a year, in the summer and winter, with awards ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. Grants are disbursed in full after approval, and projects funded through this program must be completed within a twelve-month period. For the upcoming cycle, applications open on November 1, 2024, beginning with a required Letter of Intent (LOI) due by November 30, 2024. Approved LOIs allow applicants to submit a full application, which is due January 10, 2025. Grant decisions will be announced on March 3, 2025.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits or other qualified organizations as outlined in the program’s FAQs. Restrictions apply: applicants may not have concurrent grants or apply for consecutive cycles for the same project more than twice. A final report from any prior grant must be completed and approved before reapplying.
The grant supports projects that foster community engagement and public education, including community forums, history projects, exhibitions, festivals, media programs, and curriculum resources. However, funds cannot be used for political advocacy, credit courses (except for teacher programs), construction, or international travel. Each grant requires a cost share, which may include cash or in-kind contributions such as volunteer hours or donated materials.
Applicants are required to use the specific budget form provided in the application portal, detailing all project costs and cost-sharing contributions. For guidance, sample budgets are available in the FAQ section. To support applicants, the grant team will hold five open office hours sessions throughout November, providing overviews and Q&A opportunities; registration is required.
