Rhode Island Supreme Court Historical Society Fund Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations focused on preserving and promoting the legal history of Rhode Island through educational and public engagement initiatives.
Description
The Rhode Island Supreme Court Historical Society Fund, administered by the Rhode Island Foundation, supports nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving and promoting the legal history of Rhode Island. Established in 1998 from the remaining assets of the now-defunct Rhode Island Supreme Court Historical Society, this fund aims to perpetuate the history of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and the broader judicial system through educational, archival, and public engagement efforts.
Grant funding from this program is available for projects that document, preserve, and promote Rhode Island’s legal and constitutional history. This includes activities such as preserving artifacts and court records, publishing historical works about Rhode Island’s judiciary, and hosting public forums or educational programs that engage communities with the state's legal heritage. The fund plays an essential role in ensuring that the state’s judicial legacy is accessible to the public and protected for future generations.
Applicants are required to submit a complete application and budget form through the Rhode Island Foundation’s online system, using the designated “Small Grant Programs” application form. Applications open six weeks prior to the deadline and must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. EST on May 12, 2025. Matching support, either through direct funds or in-kind services, is expected from applicants to demonstrate their investment in the project. However, funds may not be used to purchase equipment.
Grants are awarded on an annual basis. While the maximum or minimum award amounts are not specified, the emphasis is on historical preservation, education, and public engagement. Organizations are also encouraged to consider the Joseph O’Neill Ott Fund, which has similar objectives and may provide an additional funding avenue for qualifying projects.
For questions or assistance with the application process, applicants may contact Monica Benson, the Foundation’s Scholarship and Special Funds Administrator, at (401) 427-4017 or via email. The Rhode Island Foundation is located at One Union Station, Providence, RI.
