ROSES 2025: B.2 Heliophysics Supporting Research

This funding opportunity provides financial support for U.S.-based research institutions to advance the study of the Sun and its effects on the solar system, including Earth's space environment.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has released the Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) 2025 funding opportunity, specifically the B.2 Heliophysics Supporting Research program. This opportunity is part of NASA’s annual omnibus Research Announcement, which includes numerous program elements covering a broad range of basic and applied research in space and Earth sciences. Awards will be issued primarily as grants and cooperative agreements, with contracts being less common due to the nature of the work solicited. The funding is designed to support research that advances NASA’s heliophysics mission, which focuses on the study of the Sun and its interactions with the solar system, including Earth’s space environment.

Applicants must submit a two-step application process. The Step-1 proposal is due on April 10, 2025, and is required before submitting a Step-2 proposal. The final submission deadline for the Step-2 proposals is June 24, 2025. Proposers must retrieve the instructions document associated with the application package, as there are mandatory forms that must be included in the submission. The estimated performance period for awards is typically three years, though some programs may allow up to five years or specify shorter durations.

Eligibility for this funding opportunity is primarily limited to institutions registered on the NASA Solicitation and Proposal Integrated Review and Evaluation System (NSPIRES). U.S.-based institutions are generally preferred, but organizations outside the U.S. may apply under specific conditions that follow NASA’s no-exchange-of-funds policy. Some NASA Research Announcements (NRAs) are issued jointly with non-U.S. organizations, particularly for guest observing programs, which may contain additional guidelines for international applicants.

Applicants must review the full text of the program element by accessing the ROSES-2025 solicitation through NASA’s NSPIRES system. Program elements and deadlines can be found in Tables 2 and 3 of the solicitation. The ROSES-2025 funding opportunity covers a wide range of research topics, each with its own specific objectives, requirements, and deadlines. Applicants should carefully review these elements to align their proposals with the program’s mission.

General questions regarding ROSES-2025 should be directed to the SMD Deputy Associate Administrator for Research at sara@nasa.gov. For questions specific to the B.2 Heliophysics Supporting Research program, applicants may contact Reinhard Friedel at (202) 281-6360 or Esayas Shume at (202) 510-1860.

Applicants can stay updated on amendments, clarifications, and corrections by subscribing to the SMD mailing list, the ROSES-2025 blog feed, or Google Calendar updates. More information and application materials are available through https://solicitation.nasaprs.com/ROSES2025.
