This grant provides $5,000 to women and nonbinary journalists for reporting on unconventional or overlooked communities, honoring the legacy of a fearless journalist.
Description
The Kim Wall Memorial Fund, administered by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), offers $5,000 grants to women and nonbinary journalists whose work reflects Kim Wall’s dedication to uncovering subcultures and “undercurrents of rebellion.” The fund aims to support journalistic exploration and coverage of unconventional or overlooked communities and stories, honoring Kim Wall's legacy of adventurous and fearless reporting.
Eligible applicants must identify as women or nonbinary individuals with at least one year of professional journalism experience, excluding internships. Applicants from all over the world may apply, whether working as staff journalists or freelancers. Applications must be submitted individually, though part of the proposed budget may include allocations for collaborators such as photographers or producers. Proficiency in English is required for full participation in the program, but stories may be published in any language. Applicants should demonstrate either prior publication in reputable media outlets or interest from an editor.
The grants cover various reporting-related costs, including travel, logistics, visa fees, professional stipends, and payments for supporting roles like translators or producers. The fund does not support equipment purchases, rentals, or academic research.
Applications are accepted from November 6 to December 8, 2024, via Submittable, with results announced on March 23, 2025—Kim Wall's birthday. For further assistance, applicants can visit the IWMF website or contact program coordinator Divya Tewari at dtewari@iwmf.org.
