Vermont Arts Council announces Artist Development Grant Program
This grant provides financial support to Vermont artists at any career stage for skill development, business growth, and recovery from the impacts of the 2024 floods.
Description
The Vermont Arts Council’s Artist Development Grants are designed to support Vermont artists at any career stage. These grants provide funding for activities that improve artistic skills, enhance business viability, or enable the creation of new work through significant opportunities. A new feature of the program this year is the use of a random draw process for grant selection, ensuring geographic diversity by awarding grants in proportion to application demand within designated Creative Zones. Additionally, a specific allocation is available for artists impacted by the 2024 floods, offering relief for damages to tools, equipment, and studios, as well as lost income due to event cancellations.
Eligible expenses include advanced artistic training with mentors, attending professional conferences, contracting professional services for business and artistic development, and acquiring materials or equipment valued under $5,000. Renting studio space outside of one’s home for new projects is also covered. For flood-affected artists, eligible costs include repairs to studio spaces, replacing damaged materials or equipment, and covering revenue losses from canceled events. Examples of previously funded projects can be found in the FY25 grantee list, offering insights into how the grant funds have been utilized in the past.
The program is funded in part by the Vermont Community Foundation and private donors. Artists who require assistance with the application process or alternate formats for accessibility can contact the grant program manager or the accessibility coordinator. Applications are submitted online, and tutorial videos are available to guide applicants through the process.
The application deadline for the FY25 cycle is January 28, 2025. Interested artists are encouraged to review the detailed guidelines, application previews, and new changes to the grant rules to ensure their submissions meet the program criteria. Flood relief applicants should highlight how the 2024 floods have specifically impacted their artistic practice or business.
Evaluation for the grant is based on eligibility criteria, with the selection made through the random draw method. This process aims to fairly distribute opportunities while maintaining geographic representation. Artists interested in applying or with further questions can schedule a call with the program manager or access resources provided on the Vermont Arts Council’s website.
The Vermont Arts Council emphasizes inclusivity and accessibility in its programs, encouraging all eligible Vermont artists to apply. With its focus on skill enhancement, business growth, and support for resilience in challenging times, the Artist Development Grant program offers valuable resources for sustaining and advancing artistic endeavors across the state.
