Increasing the Number of Certified Teachers in Philadelphia
This funding opportunity provides financial support to organizations and institutions working to increase the number of certified teachers, particularly those from diverse backgrounds, in Philadelphia public schools, with a focus on early education.
Description
The William Penn Foundation (WPF) is accepting applications for funding to support efforts aimed at increasing the percentage of fully certified teachers in Philadelphia public schools. This initiative also seeks to develop a teaching workforce whose racial and ethnic diversity more closely aligns with that of the student body. The program emphasizes projects focusing on teachers for grades K-3 but will also consider programs that serve other grade levels.
Eligible projects may address teacher certification and employment in Philadelphia public schools or the retention of certified teachers. Examples of supported efforts include improving teacher education programs, recruiting and retaining diverse teaching candidates, mentoring, facilitating certification processes, promoting loan forgiveness, and implementing supportive policies. Applicants are encouraged to propose innovative approaches that align with these goals.
The foundation has allocated $6 million to this initiative, with individual grant requests of $500,000 to $1 million for three-year projects expected to be most competitive. Funding is directed solely toward efforts benefiting current and future teachers in Philadelphia public schools. Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2025.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) public charities, educational institutions, community organizations, and government entities. These entities must focus on services and activities that directly support teachers in Philadelphia public schools.
This opportunity provides significant resources for improving the quality and diversity of the teaching workforce in Philadelphia, especially in the critical early grades. Applicants are encouraged to consider creative and impactful strategies to address the program’s objectives and submit proposals through the appropriate channels.
