Historically Black Colleges and Universities - Undergraduate Program
This funding opportunity provides financial support to accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities to improve STEM education and research initiatives, aiming to increase participation and degree completion among underrepresented groups in these fields.
Description
The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP), under program solicitation NSF 23-563, offers funding to strengthen STEM undergraduate education and research at HBCUs. It supports various project types, including:
1. Targeted Infusion Projects (TIP) – Focus on short-term goals to enhance STEM education (up to $400,000 for 2-3 years).
2. Research on Broadening Participation in STEM Projects (BPR) – Study how to increase participation of underrepresented groups in STEM (up to $350,000 for 3 years).
3. Research Initiation Awards (RIA) – Enable STEM faculty at HBCUs to begin or renew research efforts (up to $450,000 for 3 years).
4. Implementation Projects – Support institution-wide efforts to increase STEM degree completion (up to $1.25 million to $3 million, depending on the stage of implementation, for up to 5 years).
5. Broadening Participation Research Centers (BPRC) – Establish long-term research centers focused on broadening participation in STEM (up to $9 million over 5 years).
Eligibility is limited to accredited HBCUs offering undergraduate STEM degree programs. Applicants must submit letters of intent and proposals via Research.gov or Grants.gov. Deadlines vary by project type, with most due annually in September, October, or November. The program emphasizes research-based and evidence-based approaches, and institutions are limited in the number of proposals they may submit per year.
NSF aims to fund up to 136 projects over the next two years, with an estimated budget of $62.25 million.
