Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council Grant
This grant provides funding to non-profit organizations, schools, and government agencies for innovative youth-focused projects in Northeast Michigan, addressing issues like mental health, bullying, and body image.
Description
The Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC), comprising approximately 50 students and seven advisors, awards grants to local non-profit organizations for youth-related programs and projects in the counties of Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle. Funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, NEMYAC provides around $50,000 annually. Eligible applicants include non-profit charitable organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, schools, and government agencies, while grants to religious organizations must serve the general public without sectarian overtones. The maximum grant request is $2,500 per application cycle, and applications are reviewed biannually.
Grants are aimed at future projects, with no funding for completed projects, routine operating needs, or budget deficits. Preference is given to new, dynamic projects with additional funding support. Applications for $500 or less do not require a presentation, while other applications do. Allocation decisions are made by consensus among YAC members, and recommendations require approval from the Board of Trustees. Funds address youth needs based on a triennial needs assessment, highlighting issues such as depression, mental health, stress, school work, bullying, and body image.
