This funding initiative provides financial support to youth-led projects and organizations serving youth in Wapello County, Iowa, focusing on educational attainment and health needs.

Description

The Legacy Youth Alliance (LYA) is a funding initiative of the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation aimed at empowering youth-led projects and youth-serving organizations in Wapello County, Iowa. The LYA provides grants to initiatives that are primarily led by youth or specifically designed to benefit youth populations. The program is rooted in the Foundation's broader commitment to enhancing the wellbeing of local communities through focused, impactful philanthropy.

To be eligible for LYA funding, applicants must be registered IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations operating within Wapello County. Projects must either be spearheaded by youth or deliver services that benefit youth directly. Priority is given to applications demonstrating significant potential impact on youth, alignment with the Foundation's funding priorities, and strong collaborative frameworks. Organizations without nonprofit status may still apply if they secure a qualified fiscal sponsor, who will be responsible for managing the grant funds.

LYA places particular emphasis on proposals that promote educational attainment, especially in early childhood and post-secondary education, and those addressing the physical, mental, or social health needs of youth. Applicants are evaluated based on community impact, innovation, alignment with goals, and the capacity to leverage additional funding. Proposals must demonstrate a clear, itemized budget and include supporting letters from organizational leadership.

Applications are submitted online only, and must be accompanied by the organization’s IRS Determination Letter, a letter of support from a leadership official, and a completed budget template provided by the foundation. Grantees are required to sign a grant agreement and submit a final report within twelve months of funding. Site visits may be requested by LYA members to monitor project progress.

In 2025, two grant cycles are scheduled: the first from January 1 to February 28, and the second from September 1 to October 31. Each cycle awards a total of $10,000 in single-year grants, with a maximum of $2,500 per grant. Grants cannot be used for debt reduction, event sponsorships, or political or religious activities. For questions about the application process, applicants can contact Amy Nossaman, Grants Program Manager, via phone at 641.455.5260 or email at anossaman@ottumwalegacy.org.
