Description
The Edna Bost Barringer Young Artist Competition, organized by Arts Culture Catawba, aims to support the professional development of young artists in Catawba County, North Carolina. This annual competition alternates focus areas between performing arts and visual/literary arts. For 2025, it will feature Visual and Literary Arts. Winners are selected by a panel of judges from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, with cash awards provided to support further study in their chosen discipline.
Eligible applicants must reside in Catawba County and be 21 years old or younger. They are required to submit a completed application form, a resume detailing their artistic training and achievements, proof of age (e.g., birth certificate or passport), and an explanation of how they intend to use the scholarship funds. Literary applicants must provide 3-5 written examples of their work, while visual artists should submit 3-5 labeled examples showcasing their style and diversity. Applicants are encouraged to consult teachers for guidance in selecting appropriate samples.
Performing arts applicants are evaluated through auditions, which are closed to the public. Instrumentalists and vocalists must perform two memorized pieces, including one from the standard repertoire of their discipline. Drama applicants present two contrasting monologues, and dancers perform solo variations or contemporary pieces. Specific guidelines apply to each discipline, such as the requirement for clean music scores, appropriately cued digital recordings, and no costumes during auditions.
Applications are submitted online through the Arts Culture Catawba website. Applicants create an account to save and return to their submissions. Attachments, such as work samples and support documents, must be uploaded directly into the online form. Upon submission, applicants will receive a confirmation email with a copy of their answers for their records.
The competition emphasizes educational value, and awards are granted based on qualifications rather than performance quality alone. Funds must be used for the intended purpose outlined in the application. For assistance, applicants can contact Arts Culture Catawba via email or phone.
