Funding available for Rhode Island Nonprofits addressing Critical Community Needs
This funding initiative provides emergency financial support to Rhode Island-based nonprofits that are delivering essential services to vulnerable community members facing increased demand or funding challenges.
Description
The “United Is The Way” grant initiative by United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) offers emergency funding to Rhode Island-based nonprofit organizations that are providing critical services to vulnerable community members. This special funding cycle responds to the growing uncertainty in federal support and aims to stabilize nonprofit operations that are currently at risk due to reductions, delays, or elimination of government funding or those experiencing increased demand for services.
Applications opened on March 28, 2025, and are accepted on a rolling basis through United Way’s online grants portal. The grants provide general operating support, meaning funds can be used flexibly to sustain core operations, not just for specific programs. The application process is designed to be accessible and responsive, recognizing the urgent needs many nonprofits are facing.
In addition to financial support, UWRI offers technical assistance through its Alliance for Nonprofit Impact. This includes help with scenario planning, strategic partnerships, revenue generation, staffing models, and grant writing. Legal assistance is also available through the Lawyers’ Committee for Rhode Island, which offers training, workshops, and one-on-one consultations to help nonprofits adapt to changing regulations and funding landscapes.
Several virtual support opportunities are scheduled to assist applicants. Two informational sessions are offered on April 4 and April 11, 2025. One-on-one Q&A support is also available through “Virtual Office Hours” on April 18, April 25, and May 2, 2025. Registration is required for all support sessions via UWRI’s online event portal.
Eligible applicants must be Rhode Island-based nonprofit organizations delivering essential services to underserved communities. For technical support with the portal or questions about eligibility, applicants may contact Ruth Saah at ruth.saah@unitedwayri.org or Roshni Darnal at roshni.darnal@unitedwayri.org. United Way of Rhode Island is located at 50 Valley Street, Providence, RI 02909, and general inquiries may be directed to (401) 444-0600.
