2025 Preparing for Extreme Weather
This funding opportunity supports Minnesota livestock and specialty crop producers in improving their resilience to extreme weather through the purchase of equipment and supplies.
Description
The Preparing for Extreme Weather (Prepare) Grant, part of Minnesota's Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program, supports livestock and specialty crop producers in enhancing their resilience to extreme weather. Approximately $500,000 in funding is available, with an expected 50 to 75 grants awarded during the fiscal year (FY) 2025. Grants range from $500 to $10,000 per operation for projects costing between $1,000 and $20,000. A 50% cash match is required, and each operation may only receive one grant in FY 2025.
Eligible applicants include Minnesota livestock and specialty crop producers. Livestock encompasses a wide range of animals, including cattle, poultry, bees, and farmed cervids, while specialty crops cover fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and ornamental plants grown for sale. Projects may involve the purchase and installation of equipment or supplies to mitigate weather-related risks such as drought, flooding, hail, and severe storms. Examples of eligible projects include water tanks, irrigation systems, windbreaks, hail netting, shade systems, and worker safety equipment.
Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, and must be submitted online. New users will need to create an account, and only one application per farm is permitted. Payments are issued on a reimbursement basis after the grant contract agreements are fully signed, expected in April 2025. Purchases made before contract approval are ineligible for reimbursement.
The application review process involves a committee evaluating submissions using a scoring system outlined in the FY25 Prepare Grant Request for Proposals (RFP). The commissioner of agriculture considers committee recommendations and may also factor in geographic distribution, operation type, applicant history, and capacity to execute the project.
Applicants are encouraged to thoroughly review the RFP for detailed eligibility and application requirements. Questions not covered in the RFP or the program’s FAQ can be directed to MDA.AGRIGrants@state.mn.us with "Prepare Grant" in the subject line. Answers to submitted questions will be posted on the grant’s official page. This program offers a significant opportunity for producers to invest in weather-resilient infrastructure, protecting their operations and ensuring long-term sustainability.
