Description

The Katherine R. Smith Funds for Youth, administered by the Waterville Community Foundation in partnership with the Greater Toledo Community Foundation, aims to enhance the lives of children under the age of 18 in northwest Ohio, with a focus on Lucas and Wood counties. Priority is given to programs serving residents of Waterville and the Anthony Wayne Local School District, especially those benefiting children with developmental disabilities or who have experienced abuse. Grants are available for both operating expenses of existing programs and expenses related to establishing new programs.

Grant requests must exceed $3,000, with an annual fund total of approximately $40,000 available for distribution. Applicants should not rely on these funds for annual support, and requests for media production projects, such as films or television programs, are considered a lower priority. All applications must come from nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status that provide services within Lucas or Wood counties.

The grant application process requires submitting a narrative proposal addressing the project’s purpose, implementation plan, evaluation criteria, sustainability strategies, and a detailed project budget. Attachments must include the organization’s IRS tax-exemption letter, a board-approved operating budget, financial statements from the past 18 months (audited or unaudited), a list of board members, and a background summary of the organization. The annual deadline for proposals is January 31, with submissions required through the foundation’s online portal.

Proposals are reviewed by staff and trustees of both the Waterville Community Foundation and the Greater Toledo Community Foundation. Applicants are notified of funding decisions in March or April. Expenses incurred before notification of approval are not eligible for reimbursement.

Applications should emphasize the impact of the proposed project over the grant period and demonstrate thoughtful planning for future sustainability. The foundation encourages applications that address significant community needs and show potential for long-term positive outcomes. For questions or further assistance, applicants may contact Artisha Lawson, Program Officer, at the Greater Toledo Community Foundation.
