Woodland Indian Arts Program
This program provides funding to Native-led organizations in Wisconsin to promote and develop traditional and contemporary Native American arts, supporting cultural preservation and economic growth within Native communities.
Description
The Woodland Indian Arts Program (WIA), administered by the Wisconsin Arts Board, supports the promotion and development of traditional and contemporary Native American arts in Wisconsin. Funded through Gaming Compact monies, the program aims to strengthen cultural and economic foundations for Native arts among Wisconsin's tribes, bands, and urban Indian communities. The program emphasizes activities that build long-term structures of support for Native arts, fostering both preservation and innovation.
Eligible activities include professional arts administration positions, documentation and preservation of cultural knowledge, technical assistance and professional development for artists and arts organizations, and the promotion of Native artists through festivals, exhibitions, and media. Planning grants are also available to support strategic efforts such as adapting to changing environments, engaging communities, or professional development initiatives. Projects may involve new, expanded, or existing initiatives and can encompass both traditional and contemporary art forms.
Grants range from $1,500 to $6,000, with matching requirements that can be met through cash or in-kind contributions. Applicants must be Native-led organizations or organizations providing direct services to Wisconsin's Native American communities. Eligible organizations must be incorporated in Wisconsin, conduct arts-related work that benefits Native communities, and have operated for at least three years. Unincorporated nonprofit groups may apply with a fiscal receiver.
