The Well Foundation Grant Program
This funding opportunity provides financial support for health and wellness projects serving the residents of Goshen and Elkhart County, Indiana, specifically for eligible nonprofit organizations and public entities.
Description
The Well Foundation, previously known as the Goshen Hospital & Health Care Foundation, was founded in 1969 to strengthen and sustain Goshen General Hospital, ensuring access to quality healthcare for future generations. The foundation has contributed over $6 million to community health needs. Its assets were transferred to the Community Foundation of Elkhart County in March 2017. Now operating as the Well Foundation Fund, it focuses on health and wellness initiatives in Elkhart County, awarding approximately $200,000 annually.
The fund supports projects and programs that align with its mission of improving health and wellness in Goshen and the broader Elkhart County region. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status, public entities such as schools and municipalities, governmental units, and chambers of commerce. Requests for funding must address one or both priority areas of health and wellness, with grants of $1,000 or more available for single-year, challenge, or multi-year initiatives. Applications are reviewed within eight weeks, and funding decisions are announced in mid-November.
The foundation does not fund individuals, deficit reductions, expenses incurred before a proposal is approved, sectarian church activities, proselytizing, political activities, scholarships for higher education, or lobbying efforts. However, organizations with religious affiliations can apply if the project is nonsectarian.
Applications are submitted through an online portal and require a username and password. Before applying, organizations must contact Program Officer Vonnie Trumble. The foundation emphasizes the importance of engaging with the program officer to ensure alignment with grant criteria.
The application process includes an initial review by a program officer, who may request additional information before forwarding applications to the Well Foundation Fund Committee. Final decisions are made by the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees. All applications are evaluated competitively, and funding is not guaranteed.
Grant recipients must complete a report detailing the use of funds, with potential site visits included as part of the grant’s conditions. Reporting requirements and deadlines are provided upon grant approval. Organizations can contact Vonnie Trumble for assistance at vonnie@inspiringgood.org or (574) 295-8761.
