Greater Worcester Community Foundation

This funding initiative provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in Worcester County for projects that enhance arts, basic needs, economic opportunities, health, and youth development.

Description

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation’s Community Grant Program: Project Support is a flagship funding initiative that allocates nearly $2 million annually to support both project-based and general operating costs for nonprofits. This grant cycle focuses on five strategic areas: Arts & Creativity, Basic Needs, Economic Opportunity, Health & Wellbeing, and Youth Development. The grant supports a variety of efforts from pilot initiatives to programmatic expansion and ongoing program operations.

The current application cycle opened on April 14 and will close on June 6. An information session is scheduled for May 7 via Zoom. The process includes a two-step review, beginning with Letters of Intent due by the deadline. Selected applicants will be notified by July 7 for second-round project conversations, which will occur in July and August. Final decisions are expected in early September, with payment disbursed by mid-September. Reporting requirements for grantees will be scheduled post-award.

Each application is evaluated through multiple lenses. The Foundation prioritizes projects led by organizations that are well-integrated into Worcester County and demonstrate equity and alignment with community needs. Review criteria include feasibility, access and inclusion, innovation, clear goals, equity commitment, and organizational strength. Applications are reviewed by both Foundation staff and community volunteers.

Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits or operate under a fiscal sponsor with 501(c)(3) status. Collaboratives and coalitions are eligible with an identified lead and fiscal sponsor. Houses of worship may apply for non-faith-based community programs. Large multi-service institutions can also apply if their projects align well with focus areas. Priority is given to organizations based in and serving Worcester County, although others with significant local presence or partnerships may also qualify.

Funding amounts range from $2,500 to $25,000. Partial funding may be awarded, and no capital projects will be considered. Applicants should have stable financials and governance. Ineligible applicants include individuals, businesses, government entities, or projects integrated into school-day academic curricula. The grant excludes capital project support.

For questions, applicants are encouraged to contact Sarah Shugrue, Director of Grantmaking and Capacity Building, at 508-755-0980. Potential applicants may also reach out for coaching, conversation, or application review support prior to submission. The Foundation emphasizes transparency in the review process and offers feedback post-decision to all applicants.
