NIDA Research Education Program for Clinical Researchers and Clinicians (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Ceiling: $350,000
Federal
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (National Institutes of Health)

This funding opportunity supports educational programs that train clinicians and researchers in the U.S. to address substance use and substance use disorders through skills development and research experiences.

Description

The NIDA Research Education Program for Clinical Researchers and Clinicians (R25) aims to support educational activities that enhance the skills and research experience of clinicians, trainees, and clinical researchers in substance use and substance use disorder (SUD) research. This funding opportunity focuses on offering both skills development courses and active research experiences to address the national need for well-trained clinical scientists capable of tackling substance use crises. Emphasis is placed on fostering collaboration, mentorship, and innovative educational strategies to support the transition of participants to the next stages of their careers.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, non-profits, for-profits, local governments, and various community organizations within the U.S., excluding foreign entities. The program specifically targets U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Participants can range from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to medical residents and early-career scientists engaged in clinical and translational research relevant to substance use and SUD.

The program supports budgets up to $350,000 annually in direct costs for a maximum project period of five years. Funds can cover personnel, administrative costs, research experiences, courses, and participant-related expenses. Participants can receive compensation for program activities, though salary supplementation for full-time participants on NIH training awards is not allowed. Indirect costs are capped at 8% of modified total direct costs.

Applications must describe a well-structured education program with clear goals, detailed research and skills development activities, and integration with existing institutional resources. Proposals should emphasize mentorship, diversity, and evaluation strategies to assess the program's success. Applications must include a Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity and a Responsible Conduct of Research plan. Programs should be distinct from federally funded training programs (e.g., NRSA T32) and may incorporate interdisciplinary or collaborative approaches.

Applications are reviewed for scientific merit based on significance, innovation, approach, and the environment supporting the proposed program. Review criteria also consider the experience and commitment of program leadership, the plan to enhance diversity, and the program's alignment with NIDA’s mission. Successful applications will demonstrate potential for significant contributions to training clinicians and researchers in substance use and SUD.

The first submission deadline is March 11, 2025, with subsequent cycles until November 2027. Applications must be submitted through NIH systems such as ASSIST or Grants.gov and adhere to NIH guidelines for completeness and compliance. Institutions are encouraged to prepare early to meet registration requirements, and applicants may contact NIDA staff for guidance on program priorities and application preparation.

Awardees will be required to submit annual progress reports and participate in program evaluations. NIDA will assess the program's outcomes, including participants’ career progress and contributions to SUD research, to inform decisions about continuing or modifying the program in the future.
