2024 Establishing Large Forests (ELF)
This funding opportunity supports private landowners in New York State to establish new forested areas of at least five acres, promoting climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability.
Description
The 2024 Establishing Large Forests (ELF) Grant, administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), provides funding to support the establishment of new forested areas on privately held lands within New York State. This initiative aims to assist the state in achieving its ambitious climate change mitigation goals by encouraging large-scale, “shovel-ready” tree planting and assisted forest regeneration projects. Eligible projects must create at least five acres of new forest in currently non-forested areas and must be guided by a private forester or natural resource professional to ensure proper planning and execution.
Applications for the ELF grant are due by January 7, 2025, at 3:00 PM ET, and selected projects will operate under a three-year contract term. The grant emphasizes substantial environmental benefits, such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity enhancement, through the creation of new forested areas. This effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance New York State's environmental resilience and contribute to long-term sustainability.
To be considered, projects must meet specific requirements, including the involvement of a qualified forester or natural resource professional and the establishment of a minimum of five contiguous acres of new forest. Proposals should clearly outline the planning and implementation processes, highlighting how the project aligns with the state’s climate and environmental goals.
For assistance or additional information, applicants may contact Michelle Higgins, Environmental Program Specialist, at michelle.higgins@dec.ny.gov or 716-402-8460, or Katherine Calogero, Director of Finance, at katherine.calogero@dec.ny.gov or 518-402-9310. The ELF grant provides an opportunity for private landowners and natural resource professionals to make meaningful contributions to forest creation and environmental conservation in New York State. Prospective applicants are encouraged to prepare their proposals thoroughly and submit them on time to maximize their chances of funding.
