This funding opportunity provides financial support to various organizations, including state and local governments, nonprofits, and educational institutions, to improve the tracking and prevention of workplace injuries and illnesses across the United States.

Description

The State Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance Program (U60) is a cooperative agreement offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through its National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The program aims to strengthen and expand state-level surveillance of occupational safety and health (OSH), focusing on tracking workplace illnesses, injuries, exposures, and fatalities. The primary goals are to assess the extent and severity of these issues, identify at-risk populations and occupations, and develop policies and programs to address OSH concerns at the state level.

The estimated total program funding is $40,000,000, with individual awards ranging from a floor of $140,000 to a ceiling of $705,000 per year. The funding will support up to 23 awards. The program is open to a wide range of eligible applicants, including state governments, county governments, local municipalities, nonprofits (both with and without 501(c)(3) status), educational institutions, small businesses, for-profit organizations, Native American tribal organizations (both federally recognized and not), and special district governments. Foreign entities are not eligible to apply, but non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are also excluded.

The main objectives of the program include enhancing the capacity of states to assess and report on OSH issues, identifying workers and occupations at highest risk, establishing priorities for intervention, developing partnerships to interpret OSH data, and creating educational materials to promote safety measures. Funded programs should be proactive in accessing OSH data sources, including integrating occupational data within broader public health systems or developing new data collection methods. Programs are also expected to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention efforts.

The application process for this program will begin with a submission deadline of September 30, 2025, by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant's organization. The estimated award date is June 1, 2026, and the project start date is projected for July 1, 2026. Applicants must submit their proposals through Grants.gov. For any inquiries related to the application process, Eduardo O'Neill, PhD, MS, MPH can be contacted at fzt4@cdc.gov or by phone at 404-718-8844.

This program is an important resource for strengthening state-level occupational health surveillance, ultimately helping to improve the health and safety of workers across the United States.
