The Field Foundation of Illinois

This fellowship provides graduate students in Chicago with hands-on experience in philanthropy and grantmaking, focusing on social and economic issues while supporting community initiatives.

Description

The Field Foundation Fellowship is a prestigious opportunity for graduate students in Chicago to gain hands-on experience in philanthropy, grantmaking, and community power-building. This fellowship is designed to provide exposure to critical social and economic issues while immersing participants in the foundation’s work, which includes investing in civic infrastructure, cultural sectors, local news organizations, and grassroots organizers. The fellowship spans nine months, allowing participants to engage in real-world philanthropic activities while potentially earning academic credit through their universities.

Fellows will work closely with Field Foundation program directors and staff, gaining practical experience in reviewing grant proposals, analyzing budgets, assessing program outcomes, and identifying indicators of success. They will also support staff in conducting site visits and meetings with both grantees and potential grantees. A key component of the fellowship includes writing briefs and assisting in the preparation of grant recommendations for review by the Field Foundation Board of Directors.

Additionally, fellows will be involved in supporting the Leaders for a New Chicago Award process, which recognizes individuals who are making significant contributions to Chicago’s civic and cultural landscape. They will also have the opportunity to engage with strategic funding partners, nonprofit leaders, and other philanthropic organizations through meetings, conferences, and other networking events.

Applications for the 2025-2026 Field Fellowship are open until March 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM. Interested applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, and two writing samples via email to Richard Tran, the Field Foundation’s Director of ART & Leadership Initiatives. The fellowship takes place at the Field Foundation’s headquarters at Impact House, located at 200 W Madison St, 3rd Floor, Chicago, IL 60606.

This opportunity is ideal for graduate students seeking experience in nonprofit work, philanthropy, and grantmaking, providing them with valuable insights and professional development in the field of social impact.
