Watertown Area United Way

This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations and local government programs in the Watertown, South Dakota area that focus on improving education, health, and financial stability for residents.

Description

The Watertown Area United Way Allocation Application provides funding to organizations serving the Watertown, South Dakota area, with a primary focus on programs addressing education, health, and financial stability. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, county or city programs, and county or city programs partnered with an incorporated 501(c)(3). Organizations must have operated in South Dakota for at least one full year before applying. Applicants are required to submit documentation verifying nonprofit status or governance as a public entity.

Funding is intended for ongoing programs, not one-time projects or individual support. The Watertown Area United Way prioritizes programs that serve the highest number of residents and demonstrate strong stewardship and capacity. All funded organizations must adhere to governance guidelines, including oversight by an active, volunteer-based Board of Directors.

The 2025 allocation application process opens on March 1, 2025, and closes at 5:00 PM on April 16, 2025. Required materials include a Letter of Intent (uploaded via the application portal), financial statements, audits, Board member list, success stories with accompanying photos, and other documentation. Applications must be complete and timely to be considered.

Applicants must participate in a 15-minute Allocations Interview, scheduled for May 21–22, 2025, at Lake Area Technical College. At least one representative must attend to present the agency’s program and respond to questions. Following the interviews, the Board of Directors will determine allocation amounts, with award letters issued in June 2025. Fund disbursement begins in January 2026.

Partner agencies are subject to several conditions, including participation in United Way’s campaign efforts as a volunteer and adherence to the Black Out Policy, which prohibits fundraising from September 1 to October 31. Violations may result in sanctions, including loss of funding. Funded organizations must also publicly recognize their partnership through social media, signage, and use of United Way branding, covering related costs themselves.

Agencies are encouraged to engage with the community by sharing success stories and program impacts. This engagement strengthens awareness of United Way’s mission and promotes continued support. All questions or assistance requests regarding the application process can be directed to the Watertown Area United Way at director@watertownunitedway.org or (605) 886-5815.
