Transportation Alternatives Program
This program provides funding to local governments and organizations in Georgia for projects that improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities, enhance streetscapes, and promote safe routes to schools, ultimately fostering community development and connectivity.
Description
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), administers the Transportation Alternatives (TA) Program to enhance the quality of life in communities across Georgia. This program provides funding for non-traditional transportation projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, streetscape improvements, and other transportation-related activities that may not otherwise be feasible. The program also includes projects under the Safe Routes to School initiative, recreational trails, and the preservation of historic transportation facilities.
TA projects aim to connect and expand regional or statewide non-motorized transportation networks, address documented pedestrian or bicycle deficiencies, and support economic development or tourism. Applications must demonstrate financial feasibility, compliance with federal design standards, and the applicant’s ability to maintain the project after completion.
