Unveiling Health and Healthcare Disparities in Non-Communicable and Chronic Diseases in Latin America: Setting the Stage for Better Health Outcomes Across the Hemisphere (R01 - Clinical Trials Not Allowed)

Federal
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (National Institutes of Health)

This funding opportunity supports collaborative research projects aimed at addressing health disparities in non-communicable diseases among underserved populations in Latin America and U.S. Hispanic and Latino communities.

Description

The Unveiling Health and Healthcare Disparities in Non-Communicable and Chronic Diseases in Latin America funding opportunity supports innovative research to address health disparities in non-communicable diseases in Latin America and among U.S. Hispanic and Latino populations. The program focuses on clinical epidemiology, evaluation of health policies, and validation of measurements, specifically for diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. It encourages studies that address social determinants of health, healthcare interventions, and the role of social and structural factors in health disparities. Collaborative research teams composed of U.S.- and Latin America-based investigators are required, with an emphasis on inclusion and equitable participation of Latin American institutions.

The initiative seeks to explore healthcare access, quality of care, and clinical outcomes, particularly for underserved populations such as Indigenous and Afro-Latino communities. Topics of interest include the evaluation of health system interventions, health policy impacts, and integrated care models that address disparities. Projects should also investigate structural barriers, racism, and discrimination, along with their influence on health outcomes. Comparative studies between communities in Latin America and U.S. Hispanic and Latino populations are encouraged to uncover mechanisms driving disparities and inform interventions that improve health equity.

Applicants must represent eligible U.S.-based institutions, including those in Puerto Rico, and collaborate with Latin American investigators. At least 70 percent of the project budget must be allocated to Latin American institutions where the research will primarily be conducted. Non-U.S. organizations cannot apply but may participate as collaborators. Research teams must include at least one principal investigator from a Latin America-based institution to ensure local expertise and leadership. The maximum project period is five years, and application budgets must align with the actual needs of the proposed research.

This funding opportunity emphasizes studies with practical applications to improve healthcare and achieve health equity. Applications focusing solely on qualitative research, those that do not prioritize non-communicable diseases, or those lacking sufficient involvement from Latin American investigators will be deemed nonresponsive. Proposals must include detailed plans for data management, a collaborative approach to research, and strategies to engage local stakeholders, including policymakers and community organizations.

Applications are due starting February 5, 2025, with letters of intent encouraged 30 days prior to submission. The application process requires registration through NIH ASSIST or Grants.gov. Applicants are advised to consult with NIH program officials early to ensure compliance with requirements and alignment with program goals. Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific merit, relevance to program objectives, and alignment with NIH priorities. Funding decisions will also consider the strength of the proposed collaborations and the potential for impactful research outcomes.

Awardees must participate in annual investigator meetings to share progress, standardize research metrics, and facilitate collaboration among grantees and NIH staff. Additional reporting requirements include annual progress updates and participation in working groups. Applicants are encouraged to review detailed submission instructions and policy guidance available through NIH resources or by contacting program officials for further clarification.
