The ComEd Green Region Grant is a funding initiative launched in 2013 by ComEd in partnership with Openlands to support open space conservation projects in Northern Illinois. This program provides financial assistance for projects that enhance public open spaces, promote environmental sustainability, and improve access to nature for local communities. Since its inception, the program has awarded over $2.3 million to nearly 300 conservation projects, benefiting more than 1.5 million people. Funded projects have contributed to the restoration and improvement of 1,587 acres of land, the development of 85,082 feet of ADA-accessible trails, and the planting of 38,619 trees.

For the 2025 grant cycle, the program has introduced a special focus on climate resiliency and pollinator conservation. While projects that align with the general program guidelines are still eligible for funding, priority will be given to those that incorporate nature-based solutions to climate change and pollinator habitat conservation. Eligible projects may include restoring wetlands, savannas, and prairies; planting pollinator gardens; installing rain gardens, bioswales, or permeable surfaces; and enhancing soil health through climate-resilient plantings.

Pollinator conservation projects must provide a demonstrable benefit to local pollinator populations by following the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s (NFWF) pollinator guidance. This includes planting at least three nectar plants that bloom in different seasons, incorporating regionally native milkweed species, and establishing habitats that protect overwintering pollinators. Applicants are encouraged to include educational signage that informs the public about pollinator conservation.

Eligible applicants for the grant include non-profit organizations, schools, school districts, housing authorities, townships, counties, park districts, conservation districts, forest preserve districts, and municipal entities such as water reclamation districts. All projects must be located within ComEd’s service territory, which includes 29 counties in Northern Illinois. Nonprofits and educational agencies must secure a letter of support from a government agency in their community to apply.

The maximum grant award is $10,000 per project, and funding can be used for planning, acquisition, and improvement of open spaces, parks, natural areas, and recreational resources. The application portal opened on January 17, 2025, and the deadline for submissions is March 28, 2025, at 5 PM CT. Award recipients will be notified in early July 2025, with grant acceptance documentation due in early August 2025.

Applications will be reviewed by an advisory committee composed of county government officials and members of the region’s nonprofit conservation community. Preference will be given to first-time applicants and projects that have not previously received funding. Past grantees may reapply if they have completed all previous grant requirements. Additionally, beginning in 2025, applicants are now allowed to apply for follow-up funding on previously funded projects.
