Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable Open Science
This grant provides funding to U.S.-based organizations and educational institutions to improve open science practices and research data management across various scientific fields.
Description
The Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable Open Science (FAIROS) grant, issued by the National Science Foundation (NSF), seeks to advance open science capabilities and sustainable research data management practices across scientific disciplines. This program aims to support transformative activities that improve the efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability of research data. Eligible projects may focus on advancing research, education, and socio-technical cyberinfrastructure capacities, piloting innovative models for scientific communication and publication, developing FAIROS data portals and research data commons, and reducing barriers to data access, integration, and management across various scientific fields. The grant emphasizes enhancing the discoverability, reliability, reproducibility, and long-term preservation of research outputs, including data, software, and code.
The primary objectives of the FAIROS program are to promote innovation within the cyberinfrastructure ecosystem, ensure widespread access to scientific data, and establish effective research data management (RDM) practices. Proposals must align with one of two focus tracks: *Disciplinary Improvements,* targeting advancements within specific scientific communities, or *Cross-Cutting Improvements,* addressing broader impacts across multiple disciplines. Applicants focusing on Disciplinary Improvements are encouraged to consult with a program officer in their relevant scientific domain to confirm alignment with program goals, while those in Cross-Cutting Improvements should engage with program officers from the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC).
Eligible applicants include U.S.-based non-profit, non-academic organizations such as research labs, observatories, and professional societies, as well as accredited institutions of higher education (including community colleges). Federally recognized Tribal Nations are also eligible, alongside other federal agencies and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs). Proposals that include international collaborations must justify why specific activities cannot be performed at the U.S. campus of the applying institution.
Applicants are required to submit standard research proposals tailored to their selected track (Disciplinary or Cross-Cutting Improvements). Proposals should demonstrate clear objectives, innovative methodologies, and measurable outcomes. Proposals must also address sustainable practices in managing and sharing research outputs, ensuring long-term usability and accessibility of data and associated tools.
The total estimated program funding for FAIROS is $6,000,000, with approximately ten awards expected to be granted. The application deadline is April 9, 2025, and submissions must be completed electronically through Grants.gov. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to consult the full NSF solicitation for detailed requirements and contact the appropriate program officers for guidance.
