Disability Application Support Grant
This funding program provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and county human services agencies in Colorado to assist individuals with disabilities in accessing essential benefits like SSI, SSDI, and Medicaid.
Description
The Colorado Disability Funding Committee (CDFC), in partnership with the Colorado Disability Opportunity Office (CDOO) under the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE), has launched a $2 million grant program aimed at improving benefit application assistance for individuals with disabilities. This significant funding increase—300% higher than last year’s $500,000 allocation—will support nonprofit organizations and county human services agencies in helping applicants access benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Medicaid. The funding underscores Colorado's commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve independence and better access critical resources.
Eligible organizations can submit applications until January 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Funding for this grant cycle is made possible by revenue from sales of Colorado’s historic license plate designs, reintroduced in 2021. The plates feature iconic designs from 1914, 1915, and 1945 and have generated revenue through personalized plate reservation fees. This creative funding approach highlights Colorado’s innovative methods for addressing community needs.
The grant program aligns with Colorado's standing as the top-ranked state in the nation for people with disabilities, as recognized by a study conducted by AAA State of Play. Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera praised the initiative, emphasizing its role in expanding access to critical programs. CDOO Director Danny Combs highlighted the importance of this funding in creating new pathways for opportunity and enhancing resources for the disability community.
Interested organizations can attend virtual office hours to learn more and ask questions. Sessions will be held on December 27, 2024, from 1-2 p.m. and January 2, 2025, from 12-1 p.m. These sessions aim to assist applicants in understanding the process and preparing strong proposals.
The CDFC is governed by 13 Governor-appointed members, with a requirement that at least seven members have personal or professional experience with disabilities. The committee manages grant funds to invest in programs that improve quality of life and promote independence for Coloradans with disabilities. The CDOO, established in 2024 by HB24-1360, serves as a central hub for disability policy, fostering collaboration across agencies and advising state leadership on advancing inclusion and integration.
