Shirley Smith Youth Service Fund 2024
This grant provides financial support to youth aged 14 to 24 in Adams County for service-oriented projects that benefit communities, animals, or individuals, covering up to 75% of associated costs.
Description
The Shirley Smith Youth Service Fund, managed by the Adams County Community Foundation, offers grant opportunities to support youth in the greater Adams County region who are engaged in service or mission work. The primary objective of this fund is to help individuals aged 14 to 24 cover up to 75 percent of the cost associated with participating in service-oriented projects. These projects may be local, national, or international in scope and must be affiliated with reputable organizations such as churches, schools, or nonprofits.
This initiative emphasizes youth-driven projects that provide tangible service to people, animals, or communities. Acceptable projects can take place in diverse settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, veterinarian facilities, or other community spaces. Grants are also available for activities related to disaster relief, humanitarian outreach, or training seminars and conferences aimed at preparing youth for service.
Eligible applicants must submit a comprehensive application that includes the name of the sponsoring nonprofit or organization, a detailed project description, an explanation of the applicant's motivation, a total cost breakdown of the project or participation fee, and a fundraising plan for the applicant’s share of the cost. Importantly, the fund serves as a “last dollar” source, providing support only after at least 25% of the total cost has been secured through other sources.
Applications are reviewed quarterly, and awards are made to the sponsoring charitable organization rather than directly to individuals. This approach reinforces accountability and ensures that funds are used appropriately for their intended purpose. The quarterly deadlines for application review are March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31, with decision dates on May 1, August 1, November 1, and February 1, respectively.
Youth interested in applying should mail their applications to the Adams County Community Foundation at 25 South 4th Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325. For further information, applicants are encouraged to contact the foundation directly via email at info@adamscountycf.org. The foundation is committed to empowering young people through meaningful service experiences that benefit communities and cultivate a spirit of giving and responsibility.
