Ceiling: $4,000

Trenton Historical Society

This grant provides funding for the exterior rehabilitation of residential properties over 50 years old in Trenton, prioritizing those owned by local residents and located in historic districts.

Description

The Trenton Historical Society is now accepting applications for the 2025 Restore Trenton! grant program, which provides financial assistance to property owners for the exterior rehabilitation of historic residential properties in the City of Trenton, New Jersey. Launched in 2007, this program is dedicated to preserving the architectural heritage of Trenton by supporting the restoration and repair of homes that are at least 50 years old. Since its inception, the Society has awarded over $160,000 to aid in the preservation of the city’s historic housing stock.

Grants range from $1,000 to $4,000 and are intended for significant exterior work that maintains or restores a property’s historical character. Eligible projects include roof repairs, masonry work, restoration or replacement of architectural features, exterior painting, window and door repairs, porch and railing restoration, chimney repair, and weatherization of the building envelope. The funding cannot be used for routine maintenance, vinyl or aluminum window replacements, or interior work. Priority is given to projects focused on a home’s most visible façade(s).

To qualify, the property must be a residential structure within the city limits of Trenton and must be at least 50 years old. Preference is given to homes owned by Trenton residents and those located in historic districts or individually listed by the Trenton Landmarks Commission or the New Jersey or National Registers of Historic Places.

Applications are due by April 18, 2025. Grant awards will be announced in May 2025. A grant workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at the Trenton Free Public Library, offering guidance on the application process and eligibility. Attendance is optional but encouraged for interested applicants.

Grants are disbursed in two stages—at 50% and 100% project completion—following inspections by the Trenton Historical Society’s Preservation Committee. Award recipients are responsible for securing any required city, state, or federal permits, and projects must be completed within 12 months of the award date. The Restore Trenton! program is funded by the Society’s annual “Stop the Wrecking Ball” fundraiser, held each November.
