National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA Headquarters)

This funding opportunity supports U.S.-based institutions in developing innovative projects that improve water quality through Earth science research and technology.

Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has announced the ROSES 2025: A.45 Water Quality Applications grant opportunity. This grant is part of NASA’s Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) – 2025 solicitation, which funds a wide range of basic and applied research supporting Earth and space sciences. The grant focuses specifically on water quality applications and is designed to support projects that align with NASA’s goals in Earth Science research and technology development.

This funding opportunity will be distributed as either grants or cooperative agreements, depending on the nature of the proposed work. While specific funding amounts, including the award ceiling and floor, have not been disclosed, previous awards under the ROSES solicitation have typically been for three-year periods, with some programs allowing up to five years and others requiring shorter durations. Cost-sharing or matching is not required for this funding opportunity.

Eligibility is limited to proposers affiliated with an institution registered with NASA’s NSPIRES system. Generally, NASA only provides funding to U.S.-based institutions. However, organizations outside the U.S. may apply under a no-exchange-of-funds policy, and specific details regarding international participation can be found in the NASA Proposer’s Guide. Some programs within this solicitation may be issued jointly with non-U.S. organizations for collaborative space science initiatives.

Applicants must submit a mandatory Notice of Intent (NOI) by April 14, 2025, through the NSPIRES system. The full application is due by May 28, 2025. Additional application instructions, including required forms, can be found in the solicitation documents. It is highly recommended that applicants download the instructions document and review the specific program element within Tables 2 or 3 of the ROSES 2025 solicitation.

NASA has provided several avenues for applicants to stay updated on changes or additions to the solicitation, including mailing lists, the ROSES-2025 blog feed, and due date Google calendars. The program also maintains a FAQ section to assist applicants with common concerns. General questions about ROSES-2025 should be directed to the Office of the SMD Deputy Associate Administrator for Research at sara@nasa.gov. Specific inquiries related to this funding opportunity can be addressed to Erin Urquhart, NASA Headquarters, Earth Science Division, at erin.urquhart.jephson@nasa.gov or (202) 909-9823.
