Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grants for Nonprofit Conservation Organizations
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit conservation organizations for acquiring land and conservation easements to promote environmental protection and public recreational access.
Description
Nonprofit conservation organizations (NCOs) have the opportunity to apply for funding from eight Stewardship grant subprograms through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grants. These grants support the acquisition of land and conservation easements for conservation purposes. Specifically, four subprograms are exclusively available to NCOs: Natural Areas, Habitat Areas, Stream Bank Protection, and State Trails. With application deadlines on March 1, August 1, and November 1 annually, these grants aim to foster conservation and public recreational access. Eligible applicants must be nonprofit entities recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code and engaged in land conservation. Projects must involve land or easement acquisitions that align with nature-based outdoor recreation. Matching funds are required, covering at least 50% of project costs from non-state sources. The application process includes submitting an eligibility form, IRS filings, financial statements, and a board resolution committing to land conservation practices. Evaluation criteria focus on the project's alignment with the program's goals and the potential for conservation impact.
