Description

The Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is a leading institution in coastal and hydraulic engineering research. Established through the merger of the Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) and the Hydraulics Laboratory (HL) in 1996, and becoming part of ERDC in 1999, CHL has a rich history of contributing to both civil works and military domains. Its mission is to address the nation's most challenging coastal and hydraulics problems through innovative research, development, and application of advanced science and engineering.

The Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is a multidisciplinary research facility that addresses a wide range of civil works and military engineering challenges. Located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, GSL employs over 440 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support staff, many of whom hold advanced degrees. The laboratory's mission is to develop innovative solutions that enhance the nation's security, defense, public safety, and infrastructure.

The Environmental Laboratory (EL) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is a premier institution dedicated to advancing ecosystem science, technology, and environmental resiliency. For nearly 45 years, EL has been at the forefront of supporting the environmental mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Department of Defense (DoD), and other government agencies. Located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, with facilities across the country, EL comprises a multidisciplinary team of over 220 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel. This team is committed to transforming groundbreaking research projects into practical solutions, ranging from sensor development for natural threat detection to habitat restoration using dredge materials.

ERDC’s Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) conducts research, development, and studies and provides technical assistance and operational support in information technology (IT) and closely related fields, with particular emphasis on the areas of computer-aided interdisciplinary engineering, computer-aided design and drafting, building information modeling, computer-aided facilities management, computer science, high performance computing, advanced computer security, general-purpose computing, and sensor and instrumentation systems. These activities are conducted to support and enable execution of missions of USACE, the Army, and DoD.

The Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) is a vital research and development center within the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). Located in Champaign, Illinois, CERL is dedicated to advancing technologies that support the Department of Defense by providing high-quality facilities and realistic training lands. With a multidisciplinary team, CERL conducts research to increase the Army's ability to efficiently construct, operate, and maintain its installations while ensuring environmental quality and safety at a reduced life-cycle cost. The laboratory's focus areas include automated construction, environmental quality, and addressing infrastructure and environmental issues for military installations, contingency bases, and sustainable ranges and lands. CERL collaborates with other ERDC labs and partners in government, industry, and academia to develop technologies for the Army's current and future force while also benefiting the private and public sectors.

The mission of ERDC’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) is to solve interdisciplinary, strategically important problems of USACE, Army, DoD, and the Nation by advancing and applying science and engineering to complex environments, materials, and processes in all seasons and climates, with unique core competencies related to Earth’s cold regions. As a national resource for cold regions science and engineering, CRREL promotes understanding to support mission success through the development and delivery of transformative technical solutions that meet operational challenges. Key technical areas of research and development include signature physics, terrestrial and cryospheric sciences, biogeochemical processes, environmental fate and transport geochemistry, force projection and sustainment, cold regions infrastructure, water resources/geospatial applications and hydrology and hydraulics.

ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) conducts research related to providing rapid collection, calibration, registration, processing, analysis, integration, compression, visualization, analysis, and dissemination of remotely sensed geospatial data acquired from various manned and unmanned sources to derive high fidelity spatiotemporal information. Multi-modal data is used to create integrated and tiered geospatial products for enhanced situational understanding based on forms and methods tailored toward dissemination to Warfighters and Civil Works applications.
