Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE): International Foreign Language Education (IFLE): Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) ProgramShort-Term Projects
This grant provides funding for U.S. educational institutions and organizations to support short-term projects that promote less commonly taught foreign languages and area studies through international seminars, curriculum development, or research abroad.
Description
The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Program, administered by the Department of Education, invites applications for fiscal year 2025 to support projects focused on modern foreign languages and area studies abroad. The program funds short-term projects (4-12 weeks) and long-term advanced language training (up to 12 months) for U.S. faculty, teachers, and students. Short-term projects cover international seminars, curriculum development, or research, while long-term projects offer immersive language programs in the host country.
Eligible applicants include U.S. higher education institutions, state education departments, nonprofit educational organizations, and consortia. Individual participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and include educators and students committed to foreign language or area studies. Applications must target approved geographic areas and exclude major European languages (French, German, Spanish) in favor of less commonly taught languages.
The estimated funding for this cycle is $3.35 million, with anticipated award amounts ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 per project, depending on duration and scope. Competitive preferences include applications from Minority-Serving Institutions, community colleges, and proposals focused on STEM-related fields, the inclusion of K-12 educators, and underrepresented languages. The program assesses applications on project design, qualifications of key personnel, budget effectiveness, and anticipated impact on U.S. educational goals. Evaluation metrics track participants’ knowledge dissemination for short-term projects and language proficiency improvements for long-term programs.
Applications are open as of October 25, 2024, with a submission deadline of January 21, 2025. A pre-application webinar and application resources are available on the GPA program’s website to assist new applicants【26†source】.
