Private
Handel and Haydn Society

This fellowship provides early-career string instrumentalists from underrepresented backgrounds with training, mentorship, and performance opportunities in historically informed Baroque and Classical music.

Description

The Handel and Haydn Society is currently accepting applications for the 2025–2027 Stone Fellowship, a competitive, two-year program designed to support the professional development of early-career string instrumentalists from socio-cultural backgrounds historically underrepresented in the field of period performance. This includes musicians specializing in the violin, viola, cello, or bass. The fellowship is focused on Baroque and Classical repertoire performed with historical authenticity.

The Stone Fellowship offers fellows comprehensive artistic training, mentorship, and performance opportunities in collaboration with the Handel and Haydn Society (H+H), as well as partnerships with the New England Conservatory (NEC). Fellows will participate in H+H’s 2025–2027 concert seasons in Boston, gaining exposure to one of the nation’s most vibrant music communities. Additional benefits include career counseling and access to a broad artistic network.

Funded by a $1 million gift from the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation and additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fellowship represents a cornerstone of H+H’s strategic goal to foster a more equitable and inclusive field of historically informed performance on a national scale.

Applications are being accepted nationwide and must be submitted by April 3, 2025. Selection is based on a competitive audition process. Details about eligibility requirements and application materials are available at handelandhaydn.org/fellowship. Applicants are encouraged to thoroughly review the fellowship criteria and application procedures before submission.

The Handel and Haydn Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Boston, is one of the longest-running performing arts organizations in the United States. Since its founding in 1815, it has earned acclaim for its historically informed performances and its civic leadership, including notable moments such as its participation in celebrations surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation and tributes to Abraham Lincoln. Today, H+H continues to inspire through performances, education programs, and community engagement efforts that reach over 76,000 people annually.

Applicants or interested individuals can reach out to H+H via phone at 617-262-1815 or by email at info@handelandhaydn.org. Additional resources and contact forms are available on their website.
