Accessible Vehicles for Older Adults and People with Disabilities in Massachusetts

State
Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT)

This grant provides funding for organizations in Massachusetts to acquire accessible vehicles that improve transportation options for older adults and individuals with disabilities.

Description

The Community Transit Grant Program, administered by MassDOT, offers grants for fully accessible vehicles to enhance mobility for older adults and individuals with disabilities across Massachusetts. The FY25 Accessible Vehicle cycle aims to address gaps in the transportation network by providing accessible vans to organizations that serve these populations, complementing existing services rather than duplicating them. The program supports coordinated transportation models to expand mobility and improve access to essential services for residents with mobility challenges.

Applications for the current grant cycle are due by November 22, 2024. MassDOT requires new applicants to attend one of the two pre-application training sessions, scheduled for October 15 from 1-2:30 pm and October 17 from 10-11:30 am via Zoom. These sessions will cover the same material, making it necessary to attend only one. While attendance is mandatory for new applicants, it is recommended for all applicants. Those unable to attend should contact Molly Belanger at molly.a.belanger@dot.state.ma.us to explore alternative arrangements.

To apply, applicants must complete an online application, which is structured in three parts: information about the organization, submission of forms and documentation, and specific questions for each vehicle requested. Applicants should prepare all responses in advance, as the online form does not allow users to save and return later. The application instructions and vehicle guide provide detailed guidelines and a list of required documentation to assist applicants in preparing their submissions. Templates for necessary forms and a complete list of application questions can be found in the appendix of the instructions.

Eligible organizations interested in applying for operating or mobility management grants instead of accessible vehicles are directed to a separate application process. The Community Transit Grant Program focuses specifically on expanding vehicle access to improve the transportation options available to older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals across the state.

To stay informed about future grant opportunities and updates on the application process, interested parties are encouraged to subscribe to MassDOT’s newsletter. For more detailed guidance or any questions about the application process, contacting Molly Belanger is recommended, especially for new applicants needing access to training materials.

This grant opportunity represents an important initiative to improve transportation equity in Massachusetts, enhancing the quality of life for those who face mobility challenges by providing accessible transit solutions that connect them to essential services.
