Emerging Scholars in Family Planning Grant
This grant provides financial support to graduate-level trainees and early-career scholars in the U.S. to conduct research on abortion and contraception, fostering a diverse and inclusive family planning research community.
Description
The Society of Family Planning is offering the "Emerging Scholars in Family Planning" grant to support graduate-level trainees in developing scholarly research projects related to abortion and contraception. The primary goal is to foster a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and multidisciplinary family planning research community by supporting early-career scholars in producing publishable scholarly research. The grant aims to help these scholars build their research portfolios and integrate them into the broader family planning academic community.
Applicants may receive a maximum award of $7,500 to support direct research expenses such as statistical support, translation services, equipment, participant reimbursements, and research-related travel. Up to 20 percent of the requested award amount may be used as stipends for the scholar’s time or for conference presentations. No indirect costs are permitted. The duration of the award is 12 months, with funds available for immediate use following the receipt of a signed award agreement and IRB approval or exemption documentation.
The opportunity is open to scholars who, at the time of the award, are enrolled in a master’s or doctorate-level degree program, or in a clinical training program such as medical or nursing school or a residency, and who reside in the United States. Research projects must be US-based. Grants will be made to tax-exempt organizations on behalf of a named Principal Investigator, though Society membership is not required to apply.
Additional benefits of the program include complimentary registration, travel, and hotel accommodations for the Society's 2025 and 2026 Annual Meetings, complimentary Society membership during the grant period, a $3,000 mentorship stipend, and funding to cover one open-access publication fee. Applications are reviewed by a committee of Society members, mentors, experts, and past recipients, with up to fifteen scholars expected to be funded.
Applications must be submitted by May 20, 2025. Submission opened on January 17, 2025. Review criteria focus heavily on the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to family planning research and potential benefit from the award (75 percent) and on the quality, relevance, and feasibility of the proposed research project (25 percent).
