Wyoming Humanities

This grant provides funding for nonprofit organizations in Wyoming to create public humanities projects that foster community engagement and dialogue around culture, history, and the arts.

Description

The Spark Grant, administered by Wyoming Humanities, is designed to support public humanities projects that engage Wyoming communities through thoughtful and accessible programming. These grants provide up to $2,000 per project and are awarded monthly. Applications are due on the first working day of each month, with applicants being notified of funding decisions approximately 15 days after the submission deadline. Projects must commence at least 30 days after the application deadline to ensure adequate preparation and compliance with the grant’s guidelines.

The primary goal of the Spark Grant is to fund projects that center on the humanities and encourage public dialogue, critical thinking, and exploration of human culture. Eligible projects may include moderated discussions, curated exhibits, documentary screenings, storytelling events, or lectures—provided they involve a humanities scholar or expert and are accessible to the public. The purpose is to promote deeper understanding and engagement with history, philosophy, religion, arts, literature, law, and other cultural studies.

Funding may be used for a range of project expenses including honoraria for humanities professionals, but cannot be applied to advocacy, private research, or performances lacking educational or discussion components. Projects must include a cost share match equal to the amount requested, which can be met through cash or in-kind contributions. Wyoming Humanities encourages applications that elevate underrepresented narratives and strengthen community ties by exploring Wyoming’s cultural and historical landscape.

Eligible applicants include state or federally recognized nonprofit organizations, including libraries, museums, schools, colleges, tribal nations, and other institutions with a valid tax EIN and UEI. Organizations may also apply using a fiscal sponsor. Each organization may receive up to two grants per fiscal year (November 1–October 31), but must ensure no overlap in funding between grants. Wyoming Humanities encourages applications from new applicants and offers guidance throughout the application process.

Applicants must use the online Foundant system to apply. Registration is required, and applicants should submit under their own organization, not their fiscal sponsor. Required materials include a project narrative, budget, and evidence of the humanities professional’s involvement. Wyoming Humanities provides application support, including reviews of draft narratives and budgets.

Grant evaluation emphasizes the clarity of the project’s public engagement, the appropriateness and qualifications of the humanities professional, and the alignment with Wyoming Humanities’ mission of exploring and promoting cultural narratives across the state. Important upcoming deadlines for Spark Grant applications are April 1, May 1, and June 2, 2025. Following award notification, grantees must e-sign a grant agreement, notify their state legislators, and keep Wyoming Humanities informed of public event details. A final report is due within 45 days of the project’s conclusion, detailing attendance, outcomes, and financial expenditures.
