Mosaic Momentum (Mosaic)

This funding opportunity supports collaborative projects by nonprofit organizations focused on strengthening the environmental movement in the U.S. through infrastructure development, policy change, and enhanced communication strategies.

Description

Mosaic’s 2025 grant cycle invites organizations to submit concept notes for funding aimed at building movement infrastructure within US-based climate, conservation, environmental health, and justice movements. The overarching goal of this funding opportunity is to strengthen collaborative projects, coalitions, and networks designed to address critical infrastructure gaps, focusing on projects that create bridges across sectors, issues, and movements. The grant cycle highlights the importance of advancing both offensive and defensive strategies to protect gains and build long-term power within the environmental sector. This includes an emphasis on projects that foster stronger narrative power, defend democracy, and break down silos within the movement.

As the United States enters a new federal administration, Mosaic has identified the need for efforts that help create broader coalitions, enhance the influence of the environmental movement, and develop a more inclusive, resilient movement that can confront the challenges of the modern era, including climate change and environmental degradation. Mosaic’s grantmaking will focus on collaborative projects designed to align various organizations and leaders around effective strategies, both to protect prior successes and push for new advancements at the local and state levels.

The funding will support projects with a range of objectives, including policy change, the protection of key environmental policies, and the development of movement infrastructure. More specifically, funded projects will be expected to contribute to strengthening communications and public understanding of climate and environmental justice, defend democracy, and build bridges within and across environmental movements. These projects must be designed with accountability to the movement, ensuring that the work reflects the needs and priorities of the communities served.

The grants are designed for collaborative, place-based, or issue-based initiatives led by 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations or equivalent entities. Mosaic is particularly interested in projects that demonstrate the capacity to support existing grantees, share tools and resources across networks, and help develop programming to support at least 20 partner organizations. Additional consideration will be given to projects that propose to distribute subgrants and provide resources for others in the network.

Funding for each project will range from $50,000 to $300,000, with a focus on supporting initiatives that contribute to broader, systemic changes within the environmental field. Applicants must submit concept notes by March 5, 2025, to be considered for funding. As this grant cycle targets the expansion of environmental justice movements, priority will be given to initiatives that aim to fill critical gaps in infrastructure and enhance collaborative efforts within the broader movement.
