Montana Community Foundation announces Community Investment Program
This program provides funding to nonprofit organizations, local governments, and school districts in Rosebud, Custer, and Fallon Counties to support community-centered projects that improve quality of life and address local needs.
Description
The Community Investment Program (CIP) was established by Grid United and is administered through the Montana Community Foundation. The program aims to support and strengthen communities in Rosebud, Custer, and Fallon Counties in Eastern Montana—areas impacted by the North Plains Connector, a major transmission line project connecting the U.S. eastern and western electric grids.
CIP grants are intended to enhance the quality of life in these counties through creative and community-centered projects. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, local or tribal government entities, and school districts. Non-501(c)(3) nonprofits may also be eligible if they contact the program lead to discuss their status. While individuals and for-profit entities are not eligible to apply directly, they may participate through a qualified fiscal sponsor. Applicants may apply in multiple cycles for different phases of a project but are limited to one application per cycle per organization.
Grant awards are up to $50,000. For projects requiring funding above this limit, applicants are encouraged to contact the program coordinator directly. Funded projects should demonstrate broad community impact, address local needs, promote civic engagement, foster innovation, and leverage additional resources. Projects that are responsive to emerging community challenges or that provide creative approaches to local development are prioritized.
However, CIP funds cannot be used for religious or partisan activities, one-time social events unrelated to long-term development, or general operating expenses. The program has two funding cycles annually. The first application deadline is May 1 at 11:59 p.m., and the second is November 1 at 11:59 p.m. Applications are accepted exclusively through the Montana Community Foundation's online grant portal.
All proposals are reviewed by Community Advisory Committees composed of residents and leaders from the three eligible counties. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions following committee review. Grantees are required to submit a project report within one year of receiving funds, and subsequent grants will not be awarded until previous reports are submitted. For questions or eligibility clarification, applicants may contact Taylor Crowl at taylor@mtcf.org or 406-603-4913.
