Aquatic Invasive Species Grants 2025

State
Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation

This funding opportunity is designed to help Montana-based organizations and agencies implement projects that prevent and manage aquatic invasive species through education, research, and treatment initiatives.

Description

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), in coordination with the Montana Invasive Species Council (MISC), is accepting applications for the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Grant Program until January 5, 2025. This program aims to enhance local capacity to manage AIS through prevention, early detection, education, research, and treatment initiatives. A total of $278,000 annually has been allocated for fiscal years 2024 and 2025. DNRC administers the program, including fiscal management, while MISC oversees application reviews and provides funding recommendations.

Eligible applicants include Montana-based governmental and non-governmental entities such as communities, state and local agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofit organizations. Funded projects should align with state AIS priorities, including monitoring, outreach, and locally driven research or treatment efforts. Preference is given to locally-led, on-the-ground projects targeting AIS species listed on Montana’s Noxious Weed List or managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP). Proposals must demonstrate coordination with statewide AIS protocols and other regional efforts, and align with comprehensive invasive species plans.

The program funds projects up to $50,000 based on available resources, intended activities, and a clear, well-documented scope of work. Projects addressing identified state priorities, expanding local capacity for early detection, or promoting education and outreach are encouraged. The "Clean, Drain, Dry" campaign materials provided by FWP should be incorporated into outreach initiatives to ensure consistency. Match funding is not mandatory but strengthens proposals during the review and ranking process.

Applications will be evaluated based on alignment with state AIS priorities, local support, and administrative and financial capacity. Proposals should include measurable objectives, demonstrate local partnerships, and provide details about how statewide protocols and reporting will be integrated. Review criteria also favor projects with clear plans for measurable control of AIS, local involvement, and contributions to regional AIS efforts.

Applicants must submit proposals via Submittable, and technical assistance is available through the platform. For additional information or specific questions about education and outreach coordination, applicants may contact Tom Woolf at 406-444-1230. For general inquiries, Liz Lodman at DNRC can be reached at 406-444-0547 or liz.lodman@mt.gov. The full program guidelines, application process, and ranking criteria are available at the MISC website: misc.mt.gov.
