Grant Title: Racial Equity in STEM Education - This grant aims to fund projects that promote racial equity in STEM education by addressing systemic racism and involving those affected in leadership and decision-making.

Description

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is offering funding through its Racial Equity in STEM Education (EDU Racial Equity) program, focusing on projects that aim to advance racial equity in STEM education. This opportunity aligns with the NSF's long-standing goal to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the U.S. research and education sectors. The solicitation specifically invites proposals that address systemic racism and promote racial equity in STEM fields. Proposals should be led by, or in partnership with, those who experience inequities due to systemic racism and should center their voices, knowledge, and experiences in project leadership and decision-making.

This program will support projects that contribute to institutionalizing effective research-based practices, policies, and outcomes in STEM education, research, and the workforce, especially for those who face inequities caused by systemic racism. Projects may focus on several areas, including building theory, developing new research and assessment methods, testing innovative approaches, and changing institutional practices and policies. The program encourages projects that establish authentic partnerships with communities impacted by systemic racism and that can demonstrate scalable and effective solutions for promoting equity in STEM education and workforce development.

The anticipated funding for this program ranges from $15 million to $25 million annually, with awards typically spanning up to five years. NSF expects to issue 15 to 35 new awards. These grants may be used for fundamental or applied research, feasibility studies, or interventions in STEM education, and proposals can request up to $5 million in total.

Eligible applicants include various organizations, such as higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, and other entities specified in the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide. There are no restrictions on the number of proposals that an organization or individual can submit, and cost-sharing is not required. Proposals must be submitted through either Research.gov or Grants.gov, following the detailed guidelines provided by the NSF.

Applications will be evaluated based on two key criteria: Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts. The Intellectual Merit criterion focuses on the potential of the proposed project to advance knowledge within STEM education and research, particularly addressing systemic racism. The Broader Impacts criterion assesses the potential of the project to benefit society, especially in terms of promoting racial equity and contributing to societal goals such as improved STEM education, increased public engagement, and a more diverse and competitive STEM workforce.

Key deadlines for full proposal submissions include December 5, 2023, October 8, 2024, and October 14, 2025. The NSF strongly encourages prospective applicants to engage in early preparation and submit proposals well in advance of the deadlines to allow time for any corrections needed during the submission process.

Successful applicants will be expected to submit annual progress reports, as well as final reports upon completion of the grant.
